In 2018, Instagram shared its intention to test a prototype that can efficiently share your precise location history with Facebook. This option was planned to be implemented as a privacy setting that you have to choose. It allows Instagram to share collections of you’re exact of Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates data.

According to tech experts,”Instagram is working on a new setting that allows the app to share users’ GPS coordinates with Facebook, which could allow Facebook to Instagram users’ location even when they are not using the application. Such data could possibly be used for targeted contents and ads.”Application researcher, Jane Manchun Wong reported that Instagram was testing the feature; she also shared Screenshots that show, in the Privacy and Security settings of Facebook, an option that “Allows Facebook Products, including Messenger and Instagram, to build and use a history of precise location received through Locations Services on your device.

The current settings are when someone shares a post or story, Instagram presents them with an option called “Add Location.”

This basically gives them the option to check-in at the specific location, just you can see on the Facebook application. Users are then presented with nearby locations based on their GPS location, or even they can type into the “Find a location” text box to search for their desired location.

Many users turn to the Instagram application for places recommendations instead of Yelp or any other location review websites.

This is maybe due to the interface of the application and the easy accessibility of appetizing food, personal experience of users, aesthetic atmosphere and so forth.

While this location tagging option gives a huge boost to services and businesses, when the possibility of location history data being recorded and sent to partner applications is added to mix, it might lead the apprehensiveness among the average users.


HOW WILL THE NEW FEATURE LOOK LIKE?

The history of the location is basically a setting that allows Facebook to build a history of precise locations received through Locations Services on the device.So when the Location History is ON, Facebook will periodically add your current precise location to your Location History even if you close the application.

You can even turn off the Location History at any time in your Location Settings on the application. When this option is turned off, Facebook will stop adding new information to your Location History which you can view in your Location Settings on the app.

Though, Facebook may still receive your most recent precise location. For example, so you can post content that has tagged with your location.

Location History helps you to explore what is around you, also, you will see more relevant ads. It will also help Facebook improve its application in the future.

The Location History must be turned ON for some location features to work on Facebook, including “Nearby Friends” or “Find Wi-Fi.”


HOW WOULD USERS POSSIBLY REACT ON THE NEW FEATURE?

Facebook has given a justification statement for introducing this feature. They said,

That the application can help you explore and exactly what is around you, get more accurate search results and experience more relevant ads throughout the duo platforms.

The news is buzzing around, that the possible commingling of data would be disapproved by those who want to limit Facebook’s surveillance of their lives. It also raises suspicions on Facebook wanting to squeeze advertising profit out of the Instagram application, be it through notifications, spamming ads or pulling more data out of users.

One of the spokespersons of Facebook had to come forth to explain this initiative, he said,

To confirm all, we have not introduced updates to our location settings yet.

However, the prevalent usage of Location Tagging on Instagram, the possible release of the new feature might bring up red flags over privacy ethics.

Considering the previous records of cyber-security issues on Facebook, that easily gave access to hackers to hack around 50 million accounts letting them see info, post, profile, videos, photos, private messages, and friend lists, would be no wonder if this feature fails to get users’ approvals.Though the feature is still in prototype stages, news has exacerbated fears that Instagram is taking a page from its parent company, known as Facebook, by going after users’ personal data.
